Ramon Solsona

Born in Barcelona in 1950, he is a novelist, poet and scriptwriter. His work reflects everyday realities with great richness of register and language, from humour through to reflection, together with complex structures and lively expression.

He has published the novels Figures de calidoscopi (Kaleidoscope Shapes, 1989); Les hores detingudes (The Hours Detained,1993), a book about feelings of emptiness and the pain of absence which was awarded the “Serra d’Or” Lletra d’Or Critics’ Prize and the Prudenci Bertrana Prize in 1994; DG (1998); No tornarem mai més (We’ll Never Come Back Again, 1999); El cor de la nit (The Heart of the Night, 1999); El cor de la ciutat (The Heart of the City, based on the television series of the same name, 2001); and Línia blava (Blue Line, 2004). His short story collections are Llibreta de vacances (Holiday Notebook, 1991) and Cementiri de butxaca (Pocket Cemetery, 2006). In 1995 he published three collections of his journalistic articles, Ull de bou (Porthole), Ull de vaca (Cow’s Eye) and Reflexions de sala i alcova (Thoughts from the Living-room and Bedroom).

He is co-author of the television scripts Agència de viatges (Travel Agency, co-authored with E. Gomà, 1991-92); Estació d’enllaç (Transport Hub, co-authored with several other writers, 1996-98); and Dos és massa (Two are Too Many, co-authored with A. Manso). He has also published satirical poetry under the pseudonym of “Lo Gaiter del Besòs” (The Besòs Bagpiper) in Sach de gemecs (Bag of Groans, 1989), and an essay on the expressive possibilities of Catalan, A paraules em convides (In Words You Invite Me, 2005). In 1994 he was awarded the Avui Prize for Journalism for his work in this field as a whole.
