Who I Am and Why I Write

Manuel Baixauli

Why do I write?
I’m often asked this question at public events or in interviews and I never respond properly because I’ve never taken the time to think about it quietly, when I’m alone.
I’ll do that now.
Answer: I’m not totally sure but several possibilities come to mind.
Because life—physical life on the surface—isn’t enough for me.
To fight a monster, the Passage of Time, which degrades and annihilates everything.
To fight Oblivion, another monster, brother of the above, that swallows up everything.
So there’ll be something between me and the abyss.
Because only in literature and art are there miracles.
